The Artistry of God

As I began to read through the Bible at the beginning of this new year, my heart was stirred with the words I have read so many times…

“And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:31, ESV)

My brother George is an artist. I don’t mean that he likes to doodle, he is a full blown professional artist. It has been his life and passion since he was six years old. He is good!

One of the things I love to do is watch him create his art. What I love most about it, is the joy that it brings him. Some of his art makes no sense (he does a lot of abstract painting) but that doesn’t matter, because it makes sense to him. I like to think, to some extent, that I too am an artist of sorts. I draw a little, and write a lot. In other words I like creating things as do so many of you. In watching my brother, and drawing and writing, I have learned that there is great joy that the “creator” of the art takes in “creating the art”.

And so it is with God. When he saw everything that he had made, He saw that it was very good. I believe that He takes great joy in the things that He creates. This means He takes great joy in you and in me.

Does that make sense to us? That God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is in it, takes joy in us. It doesn’t have to…because it makes sense to Him.
