“Where were you?”

Job 38:4-6
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

The more I read the Book of Job, the more I enjoy it, especially the last few chapters. Whenever I come to this verse, my heart is stirred and I am immediately drawn to the magnificence, majesty, and omnipotence of God.

Years ago, I believe it was back in the 70’s, scientists discovered for the first time, that the rings of Saturn were braided. I remember hearing one of the scientists, who had no doubt spent much of his life studying the solar system, insisting that this was impossible. Unfortunately for him, the picture was worth a “thousand words” or thousands of hours of trying to figure God out.

I still remember vividly and instantly thinking to myself, “Those rings probably weren’t braided…until just seconds before the pictures were taken.” Wouldn’t it be just like God to demonstrate the supremacy of his knowledge, His understanding, and his omnipotence by doing something like that.

I love God’s words to Job after Job tries to figure God out:

Job 38:2-3
“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.”

There is a lot of darkening of God’s counsel today, but it will never, ever change who He is, what He says, and what He alone is capable of doing!
